WHAT ARE DENTAL CROWNS?

Dental crowns, often referred to as tooth caps, are a versatile treatment option designed to strengthen and support weakened teeth. This type of dental restoration has been used for decades, helping people achieve fully restored smiles while protecting their teeth from further damage and decay.

At Shwarts Family Dentistry we can use them to address a variety of issues, including:

  • Repairing large cavities
  • Providing teeth with the strength and protection needed after a root canal
  • Transforming teeth that are oddly shaped or appear smaller than normal

Crowns are custom-made to fit over your natural tooth, ensuring a beautifully blended smile by matching the color, size, and shape of your existing teeth.

WHO MAKES FOR A GOOD CANDIDATE?

Individuals who have experienced the following are ideal candidates for dental caps:

  • Severe tooth decay that a filling cannot treat
  • A tooth damaged by injury
  • Teeth needing a new look due to their shape or size
Manage dental anxiety with ease using sedation dentistry in Dallas.

WHAT DOES THE PROCESS INVOLVE?

Dr. Shwarts strives to make every procedure as easy as possible, completing the process in two appointments. During your first visit, he will begin by administering local anesthesia or sedation to make you comfortable. Once he is satisfied that you are ready to begin, he will start preparing your tooth. If it is severely decayed, he will clean out the decay and infection before thoroughly cleaning the tooth and filling it. He will file the tooth down to ensure the tooth crown properly fits.

After it is reshaped, he will take an impression, so it can be sent to the dental lab. There, technicians will work to create it, taking care to make sure your prosthetic matches the size, shape, and color of your natural teeth. It often takes 2 to 3 weeks for the final restoration to be complete.

Once it arrives in our office, you’ll return to have Dr. Shwarts place it over your tooth using special cement.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

  • Offers additional support to a damaged or decayed tooth
  • Protects and seals the tooth from any further problems and prevents bacteria from reinfection the tooth
  • Creates a pleasing appearance
  • Restores your tooth to its natural shape and size
  • Hides any impurities, including stains or discoloration

UNDERSTANDING THE COST

If you’ve been informed that you need a crown for your tooth, you might have a lot of questions—many of which have to deal with the overall cost of care! Here at Shwarts Family Dentistry in Dallas, we pride ourselves on being able to provide affordable restorative solutions that set up smiles for lasting success and beauty. That said, when it comes to determining the cost of dental caps in Dallas, there are a few things that our team must consider. Keep reading below to learn a little more about some of these cost factors and how insurance can play a role in restoring your compromised tooth with a crown.

Factors That Affect the Cost

Since dental crowns are customized specifically for your unique circumstances, there are a few different factors that contribute to their overall cost. Some of these include:

  • The severity of the dental damage – In some cases, preliminary treatments such as root canal therapy or dental implant placement are necessary before a crown can be placed, which adds to the overall cost of treatment.
  • The type of materials used – They are made from a variety of materials, including metal alloys, as well as natural-looking substances like porcelain, all of which vary in price.
  • How the cap is fabricated – They can be milled in a lab the traditional way, which often requires multiple appointments and particular expenses. However, some newer technologies can streamline and simplify this process.

It’s worth noting that when it comes to tooth crowns, the quality of the restoration is often reflected in the price. When you opt for higher-grade materials, you’re setting yourself up to receive a restoration that will look and feel great for many years to come.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Dental Crowns?

You’ll be happy to hear that most dental insurance companies are likely to cover at least a portion of the cost of tooth crowns, as these restorations are often deemed “medically necessary.” That said, it’s even possible to have around 50% of their cost covered; however, you should always check the specifics of your plan before committing to treatment so that there aren’t any surprises when it’s time to pay your bill. Our knowledgeable team is happy to sit down with you to review your policy so that you can rest assured you’re taking advantage of your benefits.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIOINS

If you’re interested in repairing a broken tooth or cosmetically improving an unsightly one, this might be just the treatment your smile needs. However, it’s perfectly understandable to have a few questions about the process. Before you go through with your procedure, take some time to read these questions we frequently receive from our patients.

How Much Do Dental Crowns Cost?

There is no set cost of getting a cap for your tooth. The total amount you’ll end up paying for your restoration will depend on a few different factors, such as the material used, how many you’re getting, and what kind of tooth it’s restoring. This type of restoration walks the line between cosmetic and restorative dentistry, meaning that some insurance plans will cover the majority of the cost of treatment, while others won’t. Our team will work with you to help you get the most benefits out of your individual plan and minimize your out-of-pocket costs.

Does Getting a Crown Hurt?

During your procedure, you should experience minimal discomfort. This is because we’ll make sure to administer plenty of local anesthetic. However, your affected tooth may experience some soreness for a few days following your procedure. This can be managed by taking over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen as directed on the bottle.

How Do I Care for My Dental Crown?

The great news is that they require very little extra care beyond what you would extend to your uncrowned teeth. Simply remember to brush and floss every day as you normally would, as well as attend checkups and cleanings with us every six months. Avoid using your teeth as tools to open bottles, crack nuts, open packages, etc. Lastly, don’t use your crowned tooth to chew extremely hard or sticky items, as that could cause your new tooth cap to break, become loose, or even fall off. If you follow all of these steps, your crown could last up to 15 years!

Do Dental Crowns Looks Natural?

Yes! They are made from the finest, most lifelike materials that modern dentistry has to offer. Additionally, we can customize the shape and color to blend right in with the rest of your smile. Because of this, no one should be able to tell that your new tooth isn’t the tooth you were born with. No one except our dental team, that is!
