How Dentistry Can Help You Sleep Better

Snoring and sleep apnea often have the same root cause: the soft palate and tongue over-relax during sleep, and this makes them fall towards the back of the throat and block the airway. If it’s partially obstructed, a person will snore as the passing air vibrates the tissues, but a fully blocked airway will cause a patient to choke and partially wake up (this is called obstructive sleep apnea or OSA).

To help with either problem, Dr. Shwarts can provide a patient with a small, custom-made oral appliance that fits over the teeth similar to an athletic mouthguard. It will slightly move the lower jaw forward, and this helps the airway stay completely open throughout the night. As a result, snoring stops, sleep apnea is prevented, and a patient is able to get the quality rest they need to wake up feeling fully energized.
