Frequently Asked Dentistry Questions

When it comes to your dental health, knowledge is power. That’s why, in addition to all of the hands-on clinical services we provide here at Shwarts Family Dentistry in Dallas, we’re ready to boost your dental IQ as well by answering any questions you might have. No question is too silly or too minor—if you’re curious, just ask! Below, we’ve gone ahead and answered some of our most frequently asked dentistry questions, but if there is anything else you’d like to know, you can always give us a call.

One of my teeth is hurting…what should I do?

Is there a piece of food stuck between your teeth? This is often the cause of minor toothaches and can be easily fixed just by rinsing and flossing around the tooth. If this doesn’t help, then you may have a cavity or even a crack in the enamel, in which case you should give us a call. Waiting will only allow the problem to get worse, but we’ll be able to fix it right away!

My gums bleed every time I brush/floss. Is this normal?

You may be cleaning your teeth too aggressively, so try brushing and flossing with a lighter touch for a few days. If the bleeding persists, then you might have early-stage gum disease, in which case you should contact our dental office. Gum disease is relatively easy to treat initially, but you won’t be able to do so at home. Ignoring it will only lead to more bleeding and sensitivity, so don’t hesitate to reach out!

What is the best way to replace my missing teeth?

While we offer numerous tooth replacement options here at Shwarts Family Dentistry in Dallas, our most often recommended one is dental implants. In short, they are the next best thing to natural teeth when it comes to their appearance, strength, and longevity, and Dr. Shwarts can use them to replace a single tooth or even support a full denture! Could implants be exactly what your smile needs? You can learn more by reading our full page about them here.

What is the best way to whiten my teeth?

While you’ll find plenty of whitening kits at the store, by far the safest and most effective way to brighten your smile in Dallas is to come see us at Shwarts Family Dentistry in Dallas. The bleaching products we use are much stronger than those you can buy on your own, and we know how to use them in a way that won’t make your teeth more sensitive. With either an in-office treatment or one of our custom-made kits, we can easily make your teeth six to eight shades whiter!

Is there a way to get rid of this gap between my front teeth?

We actually have two treatments that can do this: cosmetic bonding and porcelain veneers. Dr. Shwarts can apply composite bonding material to your teeth to reshape and build up the enamel to close the space, or he can place veneers over them to make the gap instantly disappear. With either option, you can look forward to beautiful results that are guaranteed to last. Which one would be best for you? Give us a call to find out.

Why do root canals hurt so much?

This is actually a myth! Root canal therapy is, in fact, a safe and virtually painless procedure when performed by an experienced dentist, and it is typically used to relieve the most severe toothaches. Often, it is the pain from the initial dental problem that is falsely associated with the treatment that’s intended to get rid of it! If you have a terrible toothache and end up needing a root canal, Dr. Shwarts will make sure you remain comfortable the entire time.

Will you take my dental insurance?

Yes, we are able to accept a wide variety of dental insurance plans and help patients maximize their benefits at every appointment. Give us a call today so we can discuss how we can use your coverage at your next visit.
